Windows IoT — a Cost-Effective Solution to the end of Windows 10 Support
Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2025. But not for everyone. The situation is different for specialized-purpose devices.
As you’ve probably heard, Microsoft will end support for one of the most widely used operating systems in October 2025.
This means that after October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide software updates, security patches, or fixes for devices running Windows 10. All such devices will become potentially vulnerable to viruses and malware and will no longer comply with regulatory requirements.
This could pose a serious challenge for specialized devices such as ATMs, POS terminals, payment kiosks, and other solutions where security is critical.
Of course, upgrading to Windows 11 is an option. However, it can be expensive and sometimes technically unfeasible due to compatibility issues.
For specialized (single-purpose) devices, there are alternative options:
- For the scenario “Need to stay on Windows 10”, we recommend purchasing Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC Upgrade. This is a Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) build of Windows 10 21H2, supported until January 13, 2032! You won't face compatibility issues since the device remains on Windows 10.
- For the scenario “Can upgrade to Windows 11”, consider Windows 11 IoT Enterprise 2024 LTSC Upgrade, based on Windows 11 24H2, with support until October 10, 2034!
Why is this cost-effective?
The answer lies in the licensing features of Windows IoT.
First, licenses are always cheaper due to usage restrictions on single-purpose devices.
Second, the license price is tied to the CPU performance. If the processor is entry- or mid-level (e.g., Atom, Celeron, Core i3, Core i5), the license cost will be 40–60% lower than any comparable desktop version! At the same time, this is the most feature-rich edition of Windows.
In summary, if you're dealing with specialized devices, we recommend one of two solutions to address the “2025 problem”:
- If the device cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 – purchase Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC Upgrade;
- If an upgrade is possible – go for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise 2024 LTSC Upgrade.
Both options will extend support for several years at minimal cost.
